Calling all new graduates. Fed up with reading mass-produced job advertisements?
Wanting to work in a modern hospital, working up your own cases from start to finish, with the support of our incredible vets, nurses and support team?
If so, then read on….
My name is Bleddyn Hobbs, I am a Clinical Director here at Maes Glas Vets. In approaching the difficult challenge of creating an ad that truly reflects our practice and ethos rather than the generic ads that are all too common, the obvious answer was to create it along with our amazing teams…. straight from the horse’s mouth!
What makes Maes Glas a great place to be:
The practice is headed by five Clinical Directors, and we pride ourselves on being friendly and approachable and aim to nurture every individual member of our valued team. We are completely “hands on” working alongside you and believe that no one team member is more important than another.
We are a 34-vet team, including Advanced Practitioners in small animal medicine, cardiology, ECC, ophthalmology and surgery. This allows us to diagnose and treat the majority of our cases in-house and also provide support to other team member in their career progression.
Further studies are actively encouraged with many of our vets currently undertaking a variety of certificates.
We are an energetic, social bunch from all walks of life with a wide range of interests and we also celebrate diversity and are proud sponsors of our local Pride Festival.
Alongside our purpose-built main hospital in Bridgend, with all mod-cons, we have four branches across South Wales. We remain committed to excellent clinical care and extremely high standards, having achieved gold level cat friendly status from the ISFM. Importantly we are a company that imposes no commercial targets on any of our team.
Yourself and the role:
Firstly, I have walked in your shoes having joined Maes Glas straight from university almost 14 years ago and understand how daunting it can be! We are experienced in the nurturing and retention of new-graduate vets.
We are able to structure your learning, building confidence and competence in your skills with a great support network including your own VetGDP advisor and a buddy (a recent graduate for day-to-day support).
With our surgical caseload we will fully support you through a gradual transition from scrubbing in to flying solo. Based primarily at our Bridgend Hospital, you will only progress to branch work once you and we are happy for this to take place, and you will be alongside a more senior vet.
We will be excited to join you and support you on your amazing journey to being an experienced and highly skilled veterinarian.
As you will be part of a Graduate Development Programme at VetPartners, you will be able to embrace a blended learning approach of training days, in-house mentoring, CPD, and clinical practice, creating a varied platform for you to grow and develop as a Veterinary Surgeon. You will be offered both supportive 1-to-1 and group mentoring sessions, for engagement and interaction, as you develop an invaluable skillset. From surgical/medical experience, to enjoying teamwork, providing refined customer service, and gaining business knowledge to support the security of great patient care.
You can find out more about the programme at: https://vetpartners.co.uk/graduates/
The Rota:
- Full-time hours
- 1:10 OOH rolling rota includes 1-Saturday and 1 week of nights (with an experienced second on-call vet for support). After a week of nights you would have a week off as recovery.
- Remaining 8 weeks are an average 4-day week and on-call free
The out of hours duties give the opportunity to be exposed to a wider range of cases plus a bonus for cases seen! Rest assured you will be fully supported, including by our amazing nurses, and will quickly gain confidence and skills.
The Area:
Bridgend is a large town nestled between the bright lights of Cardiff to the East, and Swansea to the West, the rugged Brecon Beacons to the North, and the award-winning beaches to the South. The area offers an abundance of things for you to do in your downtime away from work.
Here’s what our 2025 graduates hav to say:
‘As a new graduate working at Maes Glas, I couldn’t ask for more supportive colleagues or for a more exciting case load. No two days are ever the same! New graduates get to practice the day-to-day routine cases expected as a GP vet, but also as a hospital practice we get unique hands-on experience in interesting cases in both surgery and internal medicine. Not to mention the practice cat, Basil, who is always around for cuddles and is especially good company on night shifts. I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to practice life!’
‘I first came to Maes Glas on a final year placement and was very keen to come back to start my career as a new grad vet here. It’s a big friendly team with a wealth of experience to learn from and I’ve felt very well supported. I wanted the challenge of working nights and that experience (with a senior vet always available to call) has really helped me develop confidence in myself
