Hormone Testing
It can be very useful to have a way to determine when a bitch is ready for breeding, perhaps the dog lives a long way away or perhaps you wish to use artificial insemination to get her pregnant. Blood testing is a way of accurately determining how close the bitch is to ovulating and to obtain the best chance of conception by enabling mating at the most advantageous time. Similarly, but less widely applied hormone testing can be used as an accurate indicator of parturition.
Pregnancy diagnosis
Pregnancy diagnosis by an ultrasound scan is standard practice at Maes Glas to determine stage of pregnancy and foetal health in dogs, cats and rabbits and can be performed from 4 weeks of pregnancy.
Caesarian section
Unfortunately, when giving birth, an animal can sometimes have problems passing her offspring. Being a 24 hour practice, we are able to offer emergency caesarians at any time of the day or night when required. Please let us know in advance if you think your bitch may need a caesarian. It may also be a good idea to look at how to get to our Bridgend branch in advance.
Breeders should note that the Kennel Club has confirmed that it will no longer register any puppies born by caesarean section from any bitch which has previously had two such operations, except for scientifically proven welfare reasons.
