Acupuncture has evolved from the ancient art of placing needles into special locations on the body to alleviate pain, improve recovery rates and increase resistance to disease. It has been practiced by the Chinese and other Eastern cultures for thousands of years and may be used to treat a wide variety of illnesses.
Emotional, hereditary and environmental factors are considered important elements in disease patterns. The philosophy and aim of this type of treatment is to restore equilibrium between physical, emotional and spiritual factors – thus restoring and maintaining health. Treatment involves using needles in specific acupuncture to address imbalances in Yin and Yang as well as improving the flow of Qi and blood. The placement of needles can be superficial to the skin or deeper within muscles over specific points depending on the problem to be treated. The vast majority of pets enjoy the treatment and are very relaxed by the end of the session.
Acupuncture may be particularly effective in the treatment of chronic disease states such as arthritis, spinal pain, skin conditions and others - either to complement orthodox medical treatments or when orthodox medicine fails.
All needles used are disposable and sterile. The placement of the needles is generally not painful. Acupuncture points are used all over the body depending on the condition treated which may vary from session to session. Patients of very nervous disposition or animals in severe pain may need sedation but this is rarely required. Generally 4-12 needles are placed and left for 10-20 minutes.
Veterinary acupuncture in the UK is defined by law as an act of veterinary surgery. This means it can only be practised by a suitably qualified registered veterinary surgeon. Please ask for more details or to make an appointment.
