Pre-Purchase Examinations

Buying a horse is an exciting time which can be marred by concerns over possible health problems. A pre-purchase examination (also known as a vetting) is a way of checking for conditions which are affecting or are likely to affect the use of that horse.

What does a vetting involve?

There are two levels of vetting examination. Which vetting you request is up to you and may depend on the purchase price, the intended use, the age of the horse and the requirements of your insurance company.

We recommend that a blood sample is taken at the time of vetting which is then stored for 6 months. In cases of dispute after purchase, it can be tested for evidence of drugs that may have been in the horse's system at the time of examination.

Five Stage Vetting

A five stage vetting is a nose to tail exam, an assessment of movement in hand, an assessment of movement and cardiorespiratory system at exercise and a final trot up to check for stiffness after a short break.

Two Stage Vetting

A two stage vetting comprises only the first two of these stages, ie a full clinical exam and an assessment of movement in hand.

A two stage vetting is also known as a limited vetting as the 3rd, 4th and 5th stages are omitted. This means that conditions which are only apparent when the horse is exercising cannot be assessed.

If you need more information regarding which vetting is most suitable for your purposes please contact the practice.

You can Request Your Vetting Online. Simply fill in the form with your details and a member of staff will contact you to discuss your requirements.
