Veterinary Surgeon
Qualified Veterinary Nurse/Final Year Nursing Student

Veterinary Surgeon

Excited about investigating interesting clinical cases? What about working in a modern, hospital environment with a skilled and enthusiastic team? We are looking for an additional small animal vet for our large, fully equipped and expanding practice in sunny South Wales, only 45 minutes from the Severn bridge and convenient for the Gower, Brecon Beacons and the bright lights of Cardiff and Swansea. There’s a reason why the Welsh return to Wales, the scenery is stunning, the people are lovely and the social scene is great.

With the south Wales coastline, Rest Bay surfing, the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Gower peninsula within easy reach, the locale is great for outdoor sports enthusiasts. West and mid Wales are slightly further but still convenient for day trips and with numerous castles and heritage sites in the area, and a variety of local festivals and events, there’s always plenty to see.

We recently renovated our hospital premises in Bridgend and are committed to excellent clinical care and extremely high standards. Over half of our 20 vet team have been with the practice since graduating (several for over 10 years) and we have an excellent staff retention rate. Applicants are very welcome to chat to one of our assistants, either at interview, or in advance if preferred. Our new premises contain 2 surgical suites, isolation facilities and a completely separated cats/exotics ward with its own prep room, meaning that cats, once admitted, will not come into contact with dogs at all. We have silver level cat friendly status from the ISFM and have been awarded “outstanding” in 5 separate RCVS awards, something which no other practice in Wales has achieved.

We believe that running our own out of hours service is an essential part of the practice and we are committed to providing that within our own premises. We strongly believe that it is not in the best interests of either patient or client to be transported to and from an emergency hospital on a daily basis as happens now in far too many practices and we take pride in providing our own care with 24 hour nursing at our Bridgend branch.  Running our own OOH rota also gives exposure to exciting and utterly unpredictable emergency medicine and surgical cases with the reassurance of backup at all times from a senior vet.

We are a busy practice and the caseload would suit someone working towards a certificate (we currently have 3 people working towards medical and surgical certificates) but equally, new graduates are welcome to apply, and we are very used to supporting junior colleagues as they start their veterinary careers. Our hospital premises are fully equipped with diagnostic and surgical equipment, with our branches running their own diagnostic investigations and internally referring cases which require hospitalisation. Many staff have their own areas of interest and there is a wealth of experience available within the practice for internal second opinions.

The job will involve a mix of consulting, medical investigations, surgical caseload and branch work. Veterinary surgeons currently have one weekday off per week and work a 1:9 out of hours rota with one full weekend and 2 Saturday mornings per 9 week rotation.

There is a good and supportive social life with a strong ethos of teamwork. CPD funded and accommodation supplied if required. Please apply by email or post to Sarah Head at
maesglasmanagement@yahoo.co.uk

For new graduates:
We support and follow PDP guidelines and will arrange a veterinary surgeon to assist you with you PDP requirements. All staff who have started their careers at Maes Glas have commented on the supportive atmosphere and ready availability of assistance. We initially start your postgraduate training at our hospital branch and recognise that although you graduate with your day one competencies, it takes time to develop confidence in your abilities. We structure your learning to include developing diagnostic and surgical skills.

With our surgical caseload we are able to ensure that you can scrub in as a surgical assistant on procedures prior to performing them under supervision. Once your confidence and competence has developed you can fly solo with the reassurance of assistance at any time required. By the end of your second year, we anticipate that you will be confident with performing a large variety of soft tissue procedures including but not limited to routine neuters, cystotomies, enteric surgery, enucleations, periocular surgeries and amputations. We would also expect that you will have developed confidence in interpreting clinical pathology, formulating medical plans and utilising our diagnostic equipment.

We understand that taking a job which requires working on an out of hours rota can be a daunting proposition but our excellent nursing staff will help you get settled in and you will find that working out of hours will quickly become routine. You will see cases out of hours which rarely come in during normal working hours and we find that veterinary surgeons who work OOH develop confidence and skills far more quickly than those that haven’t and enjoy their exposure to interesting cases. For added reassurance, there is an experienced veterinary surgeon on second call at all times for advice and aid.
With a variety of younger veterinary and nursing staff, there is plenty of peer support and social events are frequently arranged with practice outings arranged periodically. The practice is also able to arrange accommodation for you, removing the hassle involved in trying to find somewhere to rent or buy.
