Passports & Microchipping

It is a legal requirement for all horses to have a passport to make sure horses treated with certain medicines don’t end up in the human food chain and to aid in preventing the sale of a stolen horse, pony or donkey. All equids identified after 31 July 2009 must also be implanted with a microchip prior to passport applications being made for them. The new rules do not apply to older horses which already have a passport but if that passport is lost and you need to apply for a new one then you must arrange to have your horse micro-chipped prior to or at the time of passport application. Any horse born after 1st July 2009 must be micro-chipped within 6 months of birth or by December 31st of the year of birth, whichever is the later.

A microchip is a small implant with a unique numeric code which is registered to your details, this means that it you move or change your phone number then you should also change your details at the central database. The chip is implanted on the left side of the crest about half way down. The implantation of microchips should be done by a veterinary surgeon.

*You can be fined up to £5,000 if you do not have a valid passport.
