Radiography is extremely useful for assessing bone and some soft tissue conditions of the limbs, neck and head. It is often used when examining horses with laminitis to determine the presence or extent of changes to the foot. We have a portable unit which enables us to visit and perform x-rays. If we have arranged to take x-rays of your horse we will require an area with a level, hard surface which can be darkened and mains electricity, alternatively, if you would prefer to save a visit charge and bring your horse in to us then we have facilities available.

Ultrasonography allows a detailed examination of superficial soft tissue structures and can also be used in some cases to assess damage to bones. We use it frequently to examine tendons and also the uterus and ovaries of mares during fertility examinations.

An endoscope is a small camera which can be passed into the nose to examine the oesophagus, trachea and internal structures of the head. This can be useful if there is nasal bleeding or discharge or respiratory problems and can also be used for the diagnosis and treatment of Strangles. We can arrange examination for gastric ulcers if required.

We have modern biochemical and haematological analysers which enable us to run blood tests on your horse and obtain results within hours, thereby assisting with a rapid diagnosis.

We undertake microscopy work which includes skin scrapes and faeces samples for parasite identification, and fluid sample analyses. We also have access to a network of specialized external laboratories which meet any needs that we are unable to provide.

Lameness Work Ups

A lame horse can be a cause for worry and concern. Modern facilities and equipment allow us to examine lame horses in order to ascertain the most effective treatment or management. A lameness investigation starts by identifying the area of pain which is usually done using local anaesthetic blocks in a sequential fashion. Once the area of concern is identified we can investigate structures in that region in greater detail using x-rays or an ultrasound scan.
