Dentistry

Horses have teeth which continue to grow throughout their lifetimes – an adaptation to the wear and tear caused by grazing large quantities of fibrous forage. Molars (grinding teeth) can become sharp and pointed, especially if there is abnormal wear which can cause discomfort, difficulty eating and changes in ridden performance.

We recommend a yearly examination from 4-5 years of age to file down excessive points and to check for other problems. If your horse has started to drop his food when eating then a check may be required sooner. Older horses may require more frequent checks as they start to lose their teeth.

We also remove wolf teeth from young horses where it is felt that they are affecting performance.
