Cattle Emergency Slaughter

The unfortunate circumstance may occur where an animal suitable for slaughter is injured before it can be transported. Some injuries may not affect transport requirements at all, some injuries may permit transport but under certain conditions - for example the animal may be allowed to travel but must be penned separately. In these cases we advise that you discuss the situation with your abattoir and also with us. The abattoir may require that you have a veterinary certificate stating that the animal is fit to travel. In these circumstances we request that you allow us to see the animal within 24hours of travelling. Please note that travelling an injured animal in a manner which compromises its welfare is an offence. (Appendix A: Information to accompany an animal for slaughter known or suspected to be injured or showing signs of abnormality can be viewed/downloaded here.)

In some cases, catastrophic injury can occur on farm which render the animal clearly unable to travel, for example a broken leg. If the injury is acute (ie it has happened in the period immediately prior to examination) and the animal was showing no signs of ill health then it may be possible to arrange on farm slaughter with your abattoir. The same conditions which occur at a normal ante-mortem inspection apply. For this reason any animal for which arrangements are made for on farm slaughter will need to be inspected by a vet. The beast must be sufficiently clean to pass inspection, must be otherwise suitable for human consumption and must have suffered an acute injury. Please call us straight away to discuss. (Appendix B: Declaration to accompany the body of cattle subject to emergency slaughter outside the slaughterhouse can be viewed/downloaded in two pages here and here.)
