Breeding Soundness Examination

Physical examination alone is unlikely to detect all subfertile animals but is important as it may highlight problems with the act of mating such as penile abnormalities, lameness or poor hindlimb conformation.

Complete infertility is uncommon in bulls and rams however recent studies have shown that up to 30% of bulls and rams are infertile or subfertile. A small reduction in fertility can make large differences in conception rates, the effect of which is to increase herd calving or flock lambing intervals.

For beef herds it can mean the difference between a compact calving period and an extended one with subsequent impacts on calf susceptibility to infectious disease, average weaning weight and profitability.

In dairy herds, every day past a calving interval of 365 days can cost in the region of £3.50. With feed prices escalating this figure is likely to increase.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Most bull and ram semen is collected by electro-ejaculation. The bull is restrained in a crush with good access to the side, a ram can usually simply be held. By electrically stimulating the animal an ejaculate can be collected and examined. The procedure is well tolerated and the sample can be examined on location.

WHAT DO WE LOOK AT?

The ejaculate is examined to check that sufficient sperm are present, alive, normal and can swim in a straight line!

The animal is examined at the same time to check for any abnormalities that would prevent him from serving successfully. These can range from conformational problems to penile deviation.
